UO helps flood victims

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The dramatic events of the last few days have moved the entire university community in Opole. Among those who suffered during the flood are also students and employees of our university. This is why we are doing everything in our power to support those affected and their relatives. We are also ready to help people who are not connected with our university. We extend our solidarity to all those suffering during this disaster.

Since Saturday (14/09/2024), the whole of Poland has been watching with sadness the dramatic events linked to the flooding in the south of the country. Tens of thousands of people have lost their belongings, and in many cases all their possessions, not only in the Opole region, but also in the Silesian and Lower Silesian voivodeships. In the very first days of the disaster, I took the decision to release funds for aid payments to UO employees and students affected by the disaster. Details on how to apply and receive the aid can be found HERE.

Places have already been prepared in the halls of residence for our students living in the flood-affected areas. All those who have been allocated places, but whose housing is scheduled for the end of September, can now move into our halls of residence.

The University of Opole Foundation has started a collection to support those who build our academic community every day. I would also like to remind you that students and staff of our university who suffered during the flood can also count on extensive assistance from the Foundation. In this regard, please contact the Foundation by email at: pomoc@fundacjauo.pl and inform them what help is needed.

I have also contacted the Rector of the University of Applied Sciences in Nysa, which also suffered during the flooding. As a result of our arrangements, we have already donated a generator and a water pump to the Academy, which will help to dry the buildings.

The power of our academic community is immense. A University of Opole graduate in charge of a day nursery in Szczecin has offered to provide staff assistance in caring for children from the areas affected by the floods. I promised that the University of Opole would provide accommodation for the whole team, which would serve as a base for trips to towns in the south of the Opole region.

In solidarity with those who suffered during the floods, the University of Opole is ready to provide assistance to all those who need it. However, in order to make such assistance a reality, please send any information on your needs to: pomoc@fundacjauo.pl. At the same time, I would like to ask all members of our academic community to support the victims of the disaster to the best of their ability, and I thank you sincerely for any such initiative.

Prof. Jacek Lipok
Rector of the University of Opole
